6-Day Wildebeest Calving Season: Immerse yourself in one of nature’s most tender yet dramatic events with our 6-Day Wildebeest Calving Season Safari. This itinerary is meticulously timed for January through March, focusing on the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains where the Great Migration halts to birth the next generation.
During this window, the nutrient-rich short grass plains teem with millions of wildebeest and zebras. It is a time of new life, but also intense action—the abundance of vulnerable calves attracts high concentrations of predators, including cheetahs, lions, hyenas, and leopards. From the birthing grounds of Ndutu to the sweeping savannas of the Central Serengeti and the depths of the Ngorongoro Crater, this journey offers the ultimate front-row seat to the Circle of Life.
Journey to the Southern Plains
Your safari begins with an 08:00 AM departure from Arusha. You will drive past the scenic Great Rift Valley, heading deep into the Ndutu Area, a region that bridges the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Southern Serengeti. This is the epicenter of the migration during the wet season.
The Calving Spectacle
For two full days, you will explore the heart of the migration. The Ndutu plains are unique because off-road driving is permitted in certain areas, allowing you to get much closer to the wildlife than in national parks.
Into the Heart of the Wilderness
After a final morning game drive in Ndutu, we shift our focus northwards. We will transition into the Central Serengeti (Seronera), an area renowned for its year-round resident wildlife and big cat population.
The Big Cat Capital
Note: The original input skipped Day 5, so I have reconstructed it based on the logistical flow between Serengeti (Day 4) and Ngorongoro (Day 6).
We start the day with a morning game drive in the Central Serengeti to catch the predators while they are most active. After lunch, we begin the scenic drive toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The World’s Largest Caldera
On your final day, you will descend 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day game drive. This UNESCO World Heritage Site acts as a natural enclosure for over 25,000 large animals.
