6-Day Wildebeest Calving Season: Ndutu & Serengeti

Overview: The Calving Spectacle

6-Day Wildebeest Calving Season: Immerse yourself in one of nature’s most tender yet dramatic events with our 6-Day Wildebeest Calving Season Safari. This itinerary is meticulously timed for January through March, focusing on the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains where the Great Migration halts to birth the next generation.

During this window, the nutrient-rich short grass plains teem with millions of wildebeest and zebras. It is a time of new life, but also intense action—the abundance of vulnerable calves attracts high concentrations of predators, including cheetahs, lions, hyenas, and leopards. From the birthing grounds of Ndutu to the sweeping savannas of the Central Serengeti and the depths of the Ngorongoro Crater, this journey offers the ultimate front-row seat to the Circle of Life.

Full Day-by-Day Itinerary

Witness the Serengeti Calving Season on this 6-day safari. Explore the Ndutu plains, Central Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater during peak migration.

Journey to the Southern Plains

Your safari begins with an 08:00 AM departure from Arusha. You will drive past the scenic Great Rift Valley, heading deep into the Ndutu Area, a region that bridges the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Southern Serengeti. This is the epicenter of the migration during the wet season.

  • The Experience: Arrive at your camp in time for a hot lunch before heading out for your first afternoon game drive. The landscape here changes dramatically from woodlands to vast, flat plains.
  • Wildlife Highlights: Keep watch for the first herds of the migration and the predators that shadow them.
  • Accommodation: Dinner and overnight at Ndutu Kati Kati Tented Camp (or similar).

The Calving Spectacle

For two full days, you will explore the heart of the migration. The Ndutu plains are unique because off-road driving is permitted in certain areas, allowing you to get much closer to the wildlife than in national parks.

  • The Experience: You will have full-day game drives (sunrise to sunset) to maximize your chances of witnessing a birth or a hunt. The atmosphere is electric with the calls of young animals and the tension of stalking predators.
  • Wildlife Highlights: Look for cheetahs using termite mounds as lookout points, prides of lions hidden in the marsh grasses, and the endless sea of wildebeest covering the horizon.
  • Accommodation: Return each evening for dinner and overnight at Ndutu Kati Kati Tented Camp.

Into the Heart of the Wilderness

After a final morning game drive in Ndutu, we shift our focus northwards. We will transition into the Central Serengeti (Seronera), an area renowned for its year-round resident wildlife and big cat population.

  • The Experience: The drive itself acts as a game drive. You will stop for a picnic lunch in the bush before entering the Seronera Valley, known for its meandering rivers and high leopard density.
  • Wildlife Highlights: While the migration is in the south, the Central Serengeti remains rich with resident herds of buffalo, impala, elephants, and solitary leopards resting in the sausage trees.
  • Accommodation: Dinner and overnight at Kubu Kubu Tented Camp (or similar), offering stunning views of the plains.

The Big Cat Capital

Note: The original input skipped Day 5, so I have reconstructed it based on the logistical flow between Serengeti (Day 4) and Ngorongoro (Day 6).

We start the day with a morning game drive in the Central Serengeti to catch the predators while they are most active. After lunch, we begin the scenic drive toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

  • The Experience: As we leave the endless plains of the Serengeti, the landscape transforms into the lush, rolling highlands of Ngorongoro. We will ascend the crater rim in the late afternoon.
  • Wildlife Highlights: En route, enjoy the changing vegetation and the possibility of spotting giraffes and elephants moving through the acacia woodlands.
  • Accommodation: Dinner and overnight at a lodge on the Crater Rim or in nearby Karatu.

The World’s Largest Caldera

On your final day, you will descend 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day game drive. This UNESCO World Heritage Site acts as a natural enclosure for over 25,000 large animals.

  • The Experience: Explore the crater floor, a microcosm of East African habitats ranging from forests to soda lakes. It is one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five in a single day.
  • Wildlife Highlights: Look for the endangered Black Rhino, massive bull elephants with giant tusks, and hippos in the Ngoitoktok Springs.
  • Departure: After the game drive and a picnic lunch, we ascend the crater and drive back to Arusha. You will be dropped off at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward flight, carrying cherished memories of the Tanzanian wild.
