Tanzania Weather Guide – Climate, Seasons & When to Visit

Tanzania doesn’t follow the typical four seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter). Instead, our calendar is dictated by the rains.

1. The Long Dry Season (June – October)

• The Vibe: Blue skies, dusty roads, and cool evenings.
• Safari Conditions: Excellent. The grass is short, and animals gather at waterholes.
• Temperature:

                 -Day: Pleasant (25°C / 77°F).

               -Night: Chilly! In the Ngorongoro Crater, it can drop to 6°C (43°F). You will need a fleece jacket for morning game drives.

2. The Short Rains (November – December)

• The Vibe: Refreshing. The dust settles, and the grass turns green.
• Rain Pattern: It usually rains for 1–2 hours in the afternoon or at night. It rarely rains all day.
• Safari Conditions: Good. This is the start of the “Green Season.”

3. The Short Dry Season (January – February)

• The Vibe: Hot and dry.
• Safari Conditions: This is the “Calving Season” in the Serengeti. It is arguably the best time for clear photography.
• Temperature: This is the hottest time of the year. Highs of 30°C (86°F) are common.

4. The Long Rains (March – May)

• The Vibe: Lush, dramatic, and wet.
• Rain Pattern: Heavy tropical downpours are common, especially in April.
• Safari Conditions: Some lodges close during this time. Roads can be muddy. However, the landscapes are incredibly beautiful and free of crowds.
