Rongai Route on Kilimanjaro is a 7-day trek starting from the remote north near the Kenyan border. Pass Mawenzi Peak, cross a desert saddle, and ascend Kibo’s eastern crater wall gradually. Ideal for beginners or seasoned trekkers seeking a rewarding journey.

Day-to-Day Breakdown

The popular “Coca-cola” route typically takes 7 to 8 days to reach Uhuru Peak. Ideal for climbers accompanied by friends, it offers advantages like fewer stations and huts selling refreshments. Most popular from July to September and December to March.

Your journey begins in the vibrant town of Arusha. Settle into your chosen Hotel or Lodge for pre-climb preparations. Attend a briefing and gear check, ensuring everything is in order for your adventure.

Complete registration at Marangu gate and transfer to Rongai. Start the climb from Nale Moru (1,950 m), passing through fields of maize and potatoes before entering pine forest. Reach Rongai One Camp (2,600 m) with views over the Kenyan plains. (6-7 hours walking)

Walk to ‘Second Cave’ (3,450 m) with views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields. Spend the afternoon resting or acclimatizing with a short walk towards Third Cave.

Cross the moorland towards Mawenzi and camp near Kikelewa Caves (3,600 m). Explore the area or relax in the sheltered valley.

Climb to Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m), nestled beneath Mawenzi. Rest or explore in the afternoon.

Cross the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite (4,700m). Prepare for the final ascent.

Begin the final ascent around 1 a.m. Reach Gillman’s Point (5,685 m) for a spectacular sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m) if desired. Descend to Kibo (4,700 m) and continue to Horombo (3,720 m). (11-15 hours walking)

Descend through vibrant tropical forest to Marangu Gate. Transfer to Mweka village and then to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for departure.
