12-Day Migration Special to Zanzibar: This is not just a safari; it is a front-row seat to nature’s most dramatic event. This special 12-day journey takes you deep into the Northern Serengeti to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration braving the crocodile-infested waters of the Mara River.
At Kilinyota Safaris, we know that timing is everything. We combine the thrill of the chase in the Serengeti and the density of wildlife in the Ngorongoro Crater with a relaxing finish on the white sands of Zanzibar. From the dust of the stampede to the cool breeze of the Indian Ocean, this is the ultimate Tanzanian adventure.
(Note: The river crossing is best viewed from July to October. Traveling outside these months? Ask us about the Calving Season itinerary!)
Your journey begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). As you exit the terminal, look for the smiling face of your Kilinyota Safaris guide holding a sign with your name.
“Karibu Tanzania!” After a warm welcome, we will drive you to your hotel in Arusha. Take this time to relax, enjoy a local beer or coffee, and rest up. The adventure of a lifetime starts tomorrow.
After breakfast, we head to Tarangire National Park. This park is famous for two things: massive majestic elephants and ancient Baobab trees that look like they have been planted upside down.
In the dry season, the Tarangire River becomes the only water source for miles, drawing in wildebeest, zebras, and giraffes. You will see herds of up to 250 elephants digging for water in the riverbed a truly humbling sight.
Today, we descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.
Imagine a volcanic bowl teeming with over 25,000 animals. Because they are enclosed by the crater walls, the wildlife density here is unmatched. It is the best place to spot the endangered Black Rhino and the “Big Five” all in one day. We will enjoy a picnic lunch by the hippo pool before ascending the rim for the night.
We leave the highlands behind and drive into the legendary Serengeti National Park. The name comes from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning “endless plains,” and you will soon see why.
As we drive through the central Seronera area, keep your eyes peeled for leopards resting in the sausage trees and cheetahs scanning the horizon from termite mounds. This area has the highest concentration of big cats in Africa.
We head North to the Kogatende region near the Mara River. This is it—the main event.
For two days, we track the massive herds of the Great Migration. The tension here is palpable. Thousands of wildebeest gather on the riverbanks, moaning and hesitating, knowing that hungry crocodiles lurk beneath the water. When one brave animal jumps, thousands follow in a chaotic, dusty, adrenaline-fueled struggle for survival. Witnessing a crossing is a raw, emotional, and unforgettable experience that few people get to see.
After the dust and drama of the Serengeti, it is time for paradise. We drive you to the local airstrip for a scenic flight directly to Zanzibar.
Watching the landscape change from golden savannah to turquoise ocean from the plane is a highlight in itself. Upon landing, a Kilinyota representative will whisk you away to your beach resort. Order a cocktail, kick off your boots, and relax.
You have three full days to enjoy the “Spice Island.”
On your final morning, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and one last dip in the ocean. Depending on your flight schedule, our driver will transfer you to Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ) for your journey home.
You leave with a camera full of photos and a heart full of memories—from the thundering hooves of the migration to the whispering palms of the coast. Safe travels!
