“Experience the wild on your own two feet.”
Often overlooked by travelers rushing to the Serengeti, Arusha National Park is a hidden gem that offers something the big parks cannot: intimacy. It is one of the few places in Tanzania where you can step out of the vehicle and walk alongside giraffes and zebras in the shadow of Mount Meru.
This is a park of contrasts. From the alkaline waters of the Momella Lakes, pink with thousands of flamingos, to the lush montane forest where the rare black-and-white colobus monkeys swing through the canopy, the diversity here is staggering. It is the perfect start to a Northern Circuit safari or a challenging warm-up for Kilimanjaro.
Walking Safaris: Due to the low density of predators, this is the premier park for guided walking safaris. Feel the thrill of standing just meters away from a towering giraffe.
Mount Meru: Tanzania’s second-highest mountain (4,566m). It offers a stunning 3-4 day climb that rivals Kilimanjaro in beauty, often used for acclimatization.
The Momella Lakes: A collection of seven shallow, alkaline lakes. They are a birdwatcher’s paradise, often blanketed in pink flamingos and best explored by canoe.
Colobus Monkeys: The ancient forests of the Ngurdoto Crater are home to the spectacular black-and-white Colobus monkey, rarely seen in other northern parks.
This extinct volcanic caldera is strictly a “no-go zone” for vehicles, which has preserved it as a pristine sanctuary. Visitors view the crater floor from rim viewpoints. Looking down, you will see a swampy emerald floor dotted with herds of buffalo and warthogs. It is like looking into a lost world.
Swap the safari jeep for a canoe. Drifting silently on the Small Momella Lake offers a unique perspective. You can watch hippos surfacing nearby (from a safe distance!) and see bushbuck coming to the water’s edge to drink, all while Mount Kilimanjaro reveals her snowy peak in the background on clear days.
