Combining safari and Zanzibar: how to plan the beach week

How to combine a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar — flight connections, how many nights on the coast, choosing a beach and what to do beyond the sand.

Bush then beach is the most requested shape of trip we plan, and it works — as long as the connection is booked properly and the coast gets enough nights to actually slow down.

Getting there

Light aircraft link the Serengeti and Arusha to Zanzibar in around an hour, often with a short stop. Flying beats the long road transfer, and it means your last safari morning stays a safari morning.

How many nights

Three is enough to unwind; four or five is where the coast starts to feel like a holiday of its own rather than a decompression stop.

Choosing a coast

  • North (Nungwi, Kendwa): swimmable at all tides, liveliest
  • East (Paje, Jambiani): wide, breezy, kite-surfing, big tidal range
  • South-east (Michamvi): quieter, good for families
  • Stone Town: one or two nights of history, spice markets and rooftop dinners

Beyond the beach

Spice farm tours, Jozani forest and its red colobus, Prison Island, snorkelling at Mnemba atoll and sunset dhow cruises all fill a day without breaking the pace.

Practicalities

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so no second visa is needed, but the island operates a mandatory inbound travel insurance scheme for visitors. Dress modestly away from the beach, especially in Stone Town.

Bush and beach

We book the internal flights, the transfers and the beach nights as one itinerary so nothing depends on a same-day connection you have to make yourself.
